Specimen 001 · An Echo Archives Novel, Book One

Ash Menagerie

In a brutal, post-Crash world ruled by technical tyranny, City Controllers hold absolute power through Echo devices implanted in every slave’s heart.

Charley Blackwood is a nekomata assassin who has done the impossible: she clawed her way to freedom. Then a false ruby heart in the chest cavity of a murdered yōkai draws her into a killing she cannot walk away from — and the victims are not reverting to their true forms at death. Their souls are still bound to this world.

“This wasn’t an autopsy — it was a smash-and-grab.”

The Echo

Echo technology has been integrated into society for a century. An entire segment of Panamera’s adult population was implanted at infancy and has never known an Echo-free heart.

01 — The internal

The implant

A small piece of biotech hardware seated directly inside the host’s heart. Correctly placed, it emits a sheen over the organ like a translucent hologram.

02 — The external

The replica

On implantation the heart is mapped and a 3D-printed anatomical replica produced — an exact facsimile of that specific organ, small enough to hold in one hand.

03 — The link

The mirror

The replica is not a remote control. It is a mirror. Any manipulation of it — a squeeze, a puncture — is instantly mirrored in the living heart.
